Bronies Show Off Their Nerd Side As They Prepare For New York Convention
February 11, 2015 – Keith Butler and Alex Davidson are two grown men who love My Little Pony. Unfortunately, their love for the show started like most Brony beginnings, through a young third party.
Before becoming a Brony, these two men don’t like the show generally because they haven’t watched them yet. They know about the Brony fandom but don’t particularly like it.
Keith Butler said that there will always be something to shock parents in every generation and that in this generation, Bronies are the parent shockers.
What they had in common was that they only found out about the show through a third party and that third party, obviously, is a girl.
Butler learned it from his 14-year old niece while Davidson found out about the show from a girl who he works with in an after-school program.
Davidson admitted that he was not exactly expecting anything good from the show and in fact, he expected it to be similar to Blue’s Clues or Barney. That all changed after looking through a series of online memes and episodes from Youtube.
Now, the two men are proud members of the Brony fandom which consists of about 7-12 million members in America alone. They will also be attending the annual Ponycon 2015 as representatives of their group. It will be held at St. Francis College in Brooklyn and it will happen on February 14 up to 16.
Attendees are bringing out their inner nerd as they prepare for the convention.
Davidson said that Bronies are like any other fan groups. All of them are similar in a way because all of them are nerds, no matter what flavor they might be.
Although the majority of the Brony population is mostly made of men, there are also women and transgender people in the group. This gender diversity is a proof of the show’s innocent nature and how it has appealed to a number of age groups no matter what gender they may be in.
Some Bronies argue that they have rejected the traditional gender roles and that in their group; people can be who they want to be.
