Recommendations from family and friends rank first in terms of trust and perception in providing honest reviews of products and services. On second place is consumer review websites that can affect a consumer’s purchase decision. A study made by Trustpilot revealed that alarming distrust of UK consumers on brands that are known for removing or censoring legitimate consumer reviews online. Four in ten respondents or 42% are concerned that censorship of reviews is a violation of their freedom of speech.
The critical role of reviews in Internet Trust report also revealed that the current state of online trust highlights the concerns of consumers that online reviews are being tampered with by brands. 71% are obviously concerned while at least 45% believe that tampering of reviews makes them waste money that they cannot afford.
Consumers are actually reliant on consumer reviews with 90% reading reviews before making a purchase decision. The average spending for purchases that were influenced by consumer reviews is about £433 each year. However, consumers are also wary of companies manipulating legitimate feedback.
According to findings, 47% of consumers believe that companies are manipulating their image through the creation of fake online reviews. At least 40% believe that there companies deleting negative reviews. This is clear sign that consumers are aware when they are being manipulated by fake news to distrust institutions.
Peter Mühlmann, founder and CEO of Trustpilot said that consumers interact with companies online but they want their feedback to be heard because it helps other consumers to see the full picture of a brand. Reviews help consumers in navigating the complex landscape of ecommerce which means that there must be transparency on how different platforms operate.
