Everything You Need To Know About Solar Roof Tiles By Tesla
There are advantages to using renewable energy such as solar panels but there are also downsides such as the fact that they are not aesthetically pleasing. This is why Elon Musk who is the founder of Tesla, decided to design a solar panel that is not only affordable but also pleasing to the eyes. He did not just create a solar panel but one that is integrated into roof tiles. Unlike regular roof tiles or kitchen tiles, the solar roof tiles developed by Tesla can turn your home into a sustainable living space.
The design was first publicized in 2016 but the actual products came out to the market just recently. The tiles have tempered glass and equipped with Powerwall batteries. Basically, it harnesses the heat of the sun during the day and save the energy to be used anytime.
The solar roof tile’s measurement is 8.65 inches by 14 inches. The design is a simple rectangle in black colour which looks like the common shingles. According to Tesla, it matches the architecture of a home while at the same time uses sunlight for energy. The company is already preparing to launch other styles but as of the moment, their textured style covers 80 per cent of the total number of orders.
For every square foot of solar tiles, the cost is around $42 but it does not mean you have to fill your entire roof with solar tiles. Tesla suggested that solar tiles should only be 35 per cent of the total area while the rest will be filled with the non-solar variety. The non-solar tiles are much cheaper at only $11 for every square foot. Prior to installation, the company will send an energy analyst to the home to determine their usage to know the coverage of solar tiles they will need. If the 35 per cent solar tile ratio is to be used, the total average cost including the non-solar tiles will be $21.85 for every square foot.
Compared to other tiles inside the house such as kitchen tiles, this is more expensive but it is considered as an investment with big returns in the long run.
