SaadKhudeir is an Iraqi soldier who has tattoos all over the body to cover the scars of burns inflicted by a car bomb in Baghdad, Iraq in 2008. Khudeir lost his fiancée in the car bomb and four years later suffered burns on 70% of his body when a suicide bomber rammed his army convoy in Fallujah. Khudeir spent $2,500 on the tattoos that cover most of his body.
Aboud Abbas an owner of a tattoo studio in Baghdad said that about 20 people requested for tattoos that will cover their scars. Years of war and unrest have resulted into war wounds on countless Iraqis. Khudeir’s back has a tattoo in the shape of a cross and a staircase with a man representing Jesus who is flanked by two angels.
There are also flames and Japanese letters on his feet and legs. Khudeir decided to have tattoos to cover his scars because people often stare at him. He felt that they were scared particularly in swimming pools. Khudeir who is a Muslim decided on the Christian icons because he believes that there is no difference between a Christian and a Muslim. The flames in the tattoos are an expression of the fires that are still raging because of his loss.
Another Iraqi soldier, ZiadEmad also got a tattoo on his arm to hide a scar he suffered while fighting the Isis in Mosul. Some Iraqi civilians are also getting tattoos in remembrance of their lost love ones. An Arabic sentence on the arms of ZuhairAtwan reminds him of his brother who was killed on a sectarian violence.
