SCG Pavilion And Its Curved Roof
One of the most common house maintenance is roofing in Sydney and it also one of the biggest market in the building industry. There are many forms of roof materials used but one of the most talked about is the curved roof installed in the Sydney Cricket Ground. The pavilion was recently redeveloped with a budget of about $197.5 million. The roof was made possible by the Free Form product, a standing roof profile, which is manufactured by Fielders Steel Roofing.
The new curved roof was designed in order to cover about 85 per cent of the renovated seating areas. The curved roof was made possible by the FreeForm profile provided by Fielders. The roof is also perfectly in sync with the canopy which has an outline that follows that of a helmet. All of these resulted in a striking effect that adds to the world class standard of the facility in terms of sports and recreation.
The MA Noble as well as the Donald Bradman stand located inside the Sydney Cricket Ground or SCG has undergone remodeling and it was completed back in July of 2014. The redevelopment was done in order to add to the previous seating number. Now, there are 13,360 more seats than before in the ground area.
AW Edwards Pty Ltd together with Cox Architects was the one who made a contract with Fielders to supply the roofing for the large canopy found in the new pavilion. The design brief was quite complex because the roof of the pavilion has a curved shape that is not standard. In the end, they chose to use the standing seam profile under the FreeForm technology to be used on the roof. The roof was installed after creating a convex in both directions starting at 120 meters from the centre, the curve then foes up to 55 meters on both sides. Due to the flexibility of the FreeForm system, they were able to recreated the natural curves in order to follow the helmet style of the canopy’s outline.
Thought this material might not be used in regular roofing in Sydney, this is a great step towards innovation and may be used as a solution in future projects.
