Street Food Stalls No Longer Allowed In Bangkok
Tourists traveling in Bangkok for the first time might be overwhelmed with the number of modern establishments in the area including a contemporary hotel in Bangkok. Aside from the establishment, one reason why Bangkok is known all over the world is the delicious street food that can be bough anywhere by stall owners selling on the streets. If it is so famous, why is the government of Thailand inhibiting the street food stalls?
It was back in 2002 when a street vendor in Bangkok named Champ came to the capital city. His hometown was Isaan in the northeast region. Upon arriving at the capital, he decided to open a food stall located in the lively street that is known as SukhumvitSoi 38. He started working at the food stall along with his beloved wife. There are other Thai vendors in the area that selling using their food stalls. He has been doing the same work for 14 years.
Unfortunately, in 2014, the owner of the building they are renting passed away. The family decided to sell the property to a developer that is proposing to construct a luxury condominium in the location. This is when Champ, along with other vendors, was forced to relocate.
They asked to stay in the area temporary while they are looking for a new location but since the news of the construction got out, business was never the same for the vendors. Soi 38 was known as one of the top spots to go to when looking for the best street food in the capital city but it was no longer the case after that.
Last year, the building was demolished. Some of the vendors decided to sell in the sidewalk just across the street but customers are very limited while others decided to go back to their provinces. Vendors that decided to stay will be welcoming another bad news as the district have decided that food stalls will be banned in all of the city.
This might not be good news for those staying in contemporary hotel in Bangkok and dreaming of experiencing the well-known street food of the country but it will benefit the city because he sidewalk will be utilized properly by the people and congestion will lessen.
